MIRAMAR launches to restore key Mediterranean ecosystems

01/04/2025

The project unites 16 organizations from six countries to implement innovative solutions against the cumulative impact of human activities on vulnerable natural areas

The European project MIRAMAR (Monitoring Cumulative Impact to Guide Mitigation and Restoration in the Mediterranean Region) is now officially underway. Launched on April 1, 2025, the initiative has a clear and ambitious goal: to improve the ecological health of the Mediterranean through a common strategy focused on monitoring, mitigating, and restoring its most fragile ecosystems.

MIRAMAR targets three particularly vulnerable environments: seagrass meadows, coastal wetlands, and habitats of endangered species. These ecosystems are under increasing pressure from overlapping threats such as climate change, pollution, tourism, and the overuse of natural resources.

16 PARTNER ORGANISATIONS

Co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED programme, the project brings together 16 partner organisations from six Mediterranean countries: Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Greece, and Albania. The consortium includes research centres, public authorities, environmental NGOs, and technical agencies, all working together to design and implement nature-based solutions adapted to local challenges.

Over the next three years, MIRAMAR will develop an innovative methodology to assess cumulative impacts, launch pilot restoration actions in selected areas, and strengthen environmental planning tools aligned with both national and EU conservation strategies.

A key pillar of the project is the transfer of scientific knowledge into practical tools. To achieve this, MIRAMAR will actively involve local stakeholders, protected area managers, and policy-makers in the co-creation of accessible, evidence-based resources to support better decision-making in conservation.

Running until 2027, MIRAMAR aims to become a replicable model for ecosystem restoration and to support a more resilient and effective environmental governance framework across the Mediterranean region.

MIRAMAR was launched on 1 April 2025 with the aim of boosting the ecological health of the Mediterranean through joint monitoring, mitigation and restoration efforts.
