“The Sentinels of Biodiversity”: when nature warns us before it’s too late

23/09/2025

The new RaiPlay documentary series turns animals and plants into protagonists by portraying them as indicators of ecosystem health. A way of listening to nature before the consequences become irreversible.

Travels through different Italian ecosystems

RaiPlay has premiered Le sentinelle della biodiversità (The Sentinels of Biodiversity), a production that travels through different Italian ecosystems to reveal how certain species act as sentinels: living signals that anticipate the effects of pollution, climate change and habitat loss.

The first episode focuses on whales, not only as majestic creatures but as true “ocean alarms” that reflect how the seas are changing. Throughout the series, viewers are taken to forests, wetlands and coastlines, underlining the idea that every living being mirrors the state of its environment.

Produced in collaboration with the National Biodiversity Centre and directed by Alessandra Peralta, the series goes beyond mere denunciation: it showcases conservation initiatives, restoration projects and the importance of civic involvement. The message is clear: the sentinels are already there, but it is up to us to listen to them.
