MIRAMAR Interreg Euro-MED project manager has released a video from the Secche della Meloria Marine Protected Area, located off Italy’s western coast, showcasing key conservation activities currently being implemented as part of this Mediterranean-wide initiative.
Secche della Meloria is one of three pilot sites selected by the University of Siena — the project’s lead partner — to study and mitigate the cumulative effects of human activity on marine ecosystems. Located off the coast of Livorno, the site combines high biodiversity with significant anthropogenic pressure, making it a strategic location for implementing ecological restoration solutions.

In the video, Dr Fossi outlines the primary goals of the MIRAMAR project, which is funded by the Interreg Euro-MED programme and aims to develop scientific strategies for restoring vulnerable marine habitats. She also highlights the importance of collaborating with local and regional stakeholders to ensure the success of the interventions.
“Working together with coastal communities, institutions, and scientific entities is essential to address the deterioration of the Mediterranean Sea,” Fossi points out in his speech.
The MIRAMAR project focuses on key habitats such as Posidonia meadows, coastal wetlands, and breeding grounds for endangered species. Through scientific monitoring, data collection and international cooperation, the project aims to establish a roadmap for marine restoration across the region.

The video offers insights into the project’s objectives, its relevance to marine conservation, and the collaborative efforts underway with local and regional partners.
